Internet Safety - 3 Sessions for 3 Unique Audiences

Cyberbullying is the use of the Internet to harass or bully others. Bullying on the Internet is long lasting and ever-present, once posted or sent via Instant Message, statements can take on a life of their own. This session discusses cyberbullying and describes the consequences both from the perspective of the bully and the person being bullied. We discuss common teenage habits that, while fairly harmless face-to-face, can be devastating when done on the Internet. This session features the NetSmartz videos, "Feathers in the Wind", "You can't take it back" and "Broken Friendship". Also featured is the true story of Ryan Halligan who was tragically victimized by cyberbullying. The session will come to a conclusion with some suggestions to students regarding ways they can make the Internet a safer place with mentoring and by reporting what makes them uncomfortable.
For Teachers, School Staff and Administrators - 3:00-4:30 pm
This session is based on the i-Safe class "Cyber Bullying, High-Tech Torment". The session discusses the online environment and how that relates to Cyber Bullying. Included is a discussion of Social Networking sites, personal web pages, blogs and other forms of High-Tech communication and their relation to cyber predators and bullying. Teachers and administrators will be shown where to find resources and what we can do together in the future to keep our students safe. A discussion of the student session and the recently launched "Mentors" program are also included. Find out how to bring the Mentor Training program to your school for 2008-2009 to help spread the word on Internet Safety to your students.

BeNetSafe.Org was founded in 2004 by Peter LaMonica, a Computer Forensics Analyst for the US Postal Inspection Service, to get the message of Internet Safety for Children to the community.
BeNetSafe.Org is a non-profit tax exempt charitable organization under section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. However, BeNetSafe.Org does not solicit funds from groups it provides training to, instead, fundraising efforts be directed to corporate and government groups. With its limited resources, volunteers cover the state giving talks to Police Departments, PTAs, Church groups, schools and other groups requesting classes. BeNetSafe.Org's goal is simple; get the message of Internet safety for children and parents to the community.

Technical
This program is open to all public and private schools who have access to two-way interactive video equipment (ISDN or IP). If you are unsure whether or not you have access to this type of equipment, or don't understand these terms, you should be working with your school's technology coordinator. This session does not work with a web cam hooked up to a computer. Your equipment should be able to do H.323 (IP) or H.320 (ISDN) videoconference connections.
