May 12, 2008, 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM
"Choices and Consequences" is a live videoconference program that allows students to use virtual tour, primary sources, and role-play to explore reasons why young women and men left New England's farms to live and work in Lowell.
Students "visit" the Boott Cotton Mills weave room to see how weaving is done on power looms and speculate on what the job of weaver would be like in such a factory setting.
Students engage with a "mill worker," examine artifacts and primary sources, and virtually tour authentic sites such as the Boott Mills boardinghouse and weave room. Will your students choose to stay on the farm or go to the mill? Will they change their minds after seeing what the mill is really like? All participating classes receive pre- and post-visit materials. Program length: 45-60 minutes.
